Johnny Depp's Net Worth in 2022
See how much the embattled star has left in the bank.

When you think of pirates, treasure maps, and a hankering for rum, Captain Jack Sparrow fits the bill.
Johnny Depp brought this iconic character to life. We all know the treasure Sparrow found, but what about the actor who played him?
As elusive as treasure can be (particularly for swash-buckling pirates in the Caribbean), Depp’s managed to keep some of his and build wealth.
We’ll dive into Depp’s net worth, how he’s earned it, and how he’s spent it.

Johnny Depp’s net worth in 2022 is $150 million. This staggering number is in spite of losses that some say amount to $650 million.

How did Johnny Depp make his money?
Depp’s career did not have auspicious beginnings. He started as a musician in a band. The first band he joined called The Kids broke up. The second band Rock City Angels also didn’t work out. Though, after experiencing success as an actor, Depp’s gotten back into music.
However, he started pursuing an acting career, and this career shift has paid off. After his first movie “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, he appeared in TV shows. Then he started starring in major films including Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Murder on the Orient Express.
Depp is perhaps best known for playing Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. He is said to have earned $300 million from those movies.
Depp has also appeared in other series like Alice in Wonderland and Fantastic Beasts. Even though he wasn’t initially paid much to be in Alice in Wonderland, he ended up earning $55 million because it did well in theaters.
He was initially part of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, but was removed from the cast because of a lawsuit. Because of how the contract was written, he was still paid $16 million.
While Depp’s acting career has been a major source of income, Depp also owns a production company called Hollywood Vampires. He’s also done some endorsements in the past for brands like Dior.
How does Johnny Depp spend his money?
Depp spends money in three primary areas: lifestyle, property, and (unfortunately) legal fees.
Lifestyle
Jack Sparrow has a weakness for rum, and the man who played him enjoys wine. Depp is reported to spend tens of thousands of dollars per month on wine.
Beyond wine, Depp’s monthly expenses include caring for a private jet and paying for security. He also has a staff, and pays them monthly salaries.
Property
Depp has also purchased many types of properties, including a farm in Kentucky, a village in France, Bahaman islands, and mansions in Hollywood Hills and England.
Legal fees
Unfortunately, Depp has also spent a lot of money on legal fees.
He’s gone through several divorces, which means he’s paid lawyers and settlements. His divorce from Heard was settled with $7 million.
Beyond divorces, Depp has also filed a number of lawsuits. For example, he sued the company that had managed his finances, alleging that they had committed fraud and mismanaged his money.
He’s also been involved with litigation against British tabloid newspapers, and his ex-wife, Amber Heard for defamation. Time will tell how much of Mr. Depp's fortune will be spent on legal gees.
It’s easy to say that Depp could have a higher net worth for any number of reasons. However, a $150 million net worth is an unfathomable amount of money and wealth that many only dream of achieving.
Even though not everyone will experience wealth and success like Depp, there are a few financial and life lessons to be learned.
- It’s okay to jump ship. Depp’s early pursuit of a career in music wasn’t working out, and he decided to break into acting. After experiencing success as an actor, he started to do music again on the side.
- Follow opportunities. As Depp continued taking acting roles, he was cast in bigger movies with bigger paychecks.
- Keep an eye on your finances. Budgeting, investing, saving for retirement, and financial planning are all things you can feel confident doing. When working with a financial advisor, ask questions, even hard ones— it’s your money. It’s also worth getting a second opinion if something doesn’t feel right or make sense.
